| It is crucial that you play a
strong role in your student’s development. You must provide a nurturing
and supportive atmosphere at home and be an advocate for your student
at school. Have your student read to you for 5 - 10 minutes each night from the Barton materials that are sent home. Avoid having them read materials other than Barton so your student doesn't revert to guessing and checking that might cause discouragement. Reading to your children can be very beneficial. It will help develop their language skills and expand their vocabularies. It also will stimulate their imagination and knowledge of the world. Even after they are starting to read on their own, it’s beneficial to read to them above their reading level but on subjects that are of interest to them. This will increase their motivation to improve. Look for ways to take advantage of their gifts and strengths • Art • Athletics • Mechanics • Logic • Story telling • Music • Computers • Science • Working with hands • Acting or forensics Most of our adult lives are spent working in our areas of strength. Parents – be proactive when you’ve found what works for your student. Share with each new teacher what works well for your child. And parents – be sure you watch all the webcasts too. Not learning how to spell and read at grade level with ease is a serious problem that affects 20% or more of all people in the world. The situation can be remedied in most students with the right kind of intervention and with understanding and cooperation between home, school, and tutor. |
